Forest School began in Scandinavia in the 1950s, using woodlands as a classroom where young people learned about the natural world. At Forest School children learn to use tools, tie knots, light small fires and explore the woodlands. Activities are child centred and child led. Research has shown that Forest School can have a positive effect on children's confidence, self-esteem and independence as well as increasing physical and social skills.
A small group of young people with additional needs visit the Chisholme Estate once a week during term time, with their teacher, to learn and play.
