The Beshara School at the Chisholme Institute is a full-time residential educational establishment in the Borders of Scotland. Its courses provide an education in self-knowledge, and in our relationships to reality as a whole. It has been running courses in esoteric education for adult students of all ages and any nationality since 1975. At present the School can accommodate up to sixty-five people, and up to eighty on special occasions.
The heart of the School is a Georgian country house, built in 1752. It is surrounded by traditional estate buildings which have been converted for accommodation, and is set in 187 acres of mixed pasture and woodlands. The estate is an integrated whole, a perfect and beautiful setting for an education founded upon the core principle of the unity of all existence.
Education at the Beshara School is for the entire person, and its courses are designed to address body, mind and spirit in a balanced and integrated fashion. Chisholme House, with its garden and estate, is the physical context for this education.
The Beshara School runs throughout the year. While courses range in length from a weekend to six months, the educational context is continuous. Visitors are welcome, by arrangement, for both short and longer stays, to take part in the ongoing programme of work, study, meditation and devotional practice that underpins the life of the School and its courses. The School also makes provision for skilled and unskilled volunteers to work on building projects, on the estate or in the organic garden.
In response to the huge challenges facing humanity at this present time, the school in 2009 initiated a series of international symposia on Self-knowledge and Global Responsibility. The aim of these events is to reach towards a unified perspective on what is happening in the world today. This year's symposium is entitled "Facing the unknown", and will take place at Chisholme in September.
